A Lick Of Paint To Make Your Bathroom Feel Like New

A Lick Of Paint To Make Your Bathroom Feel Like New

Adding a lick of paint can be a simply and effective way to brighten up a drab bathroom. Like so many things in life, the trick to getting it right is good preparation, being methodical and taking your time.

 Prepare To Succeed

Preparation is everything. Spend as much time laying the groundwork as you do on the painting and the project will be a breeze. Start by removing everything that can be removed from the space and put down dust sheets to stop spatters of paint from ruining the fittings.

 Get Those Bathroom Walls Even

Now, it’s time to get the Polyfilla out. You want as even a surface as possible. The squeezy tubes of filler, although a little more costly than making your own by hand, are much more convenient and easier to work with, unless, of course, you’re a professional plasterer.

Get to work filling in all those furrows and cracks, allow to dry, then get the sandpaper out for a smooth finish. You might discover that a little bit of touching up is required afterwards. That’s okay. You want the best possible canvas for the paint. Take your time and don’t forget to re-sand when dried.

A Great Artist Needs Great Materials

When it comes to the actual painting, make sure you use a good quality paint that’s been specially formulated for areas exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms.

Again, you’ll pay a little extra but the results will be much better and, more importantly, will last longer. You don’t want to end up with cracked and peeling paint, which is exactly what will happen if you buy cheap. You should reasonably expect good paint to last at least a year.

Before you get started, don’t forget to mask off any exposed areas such as skirting boards or tiling. Rollers will cover main walls quickly. However, when it comes to edges, especially if your ceiling is a different colour than the walls, use a small artist’s brush and work slowly. Mistakes will be difficult to fix afterwards and few things look more shoddy than a white ceiling with streaks of lime green or aquamarine blue.

Allow the paint to dry for a couple of hours before deciding whether or not you need a second coat. Many paints have been specially formulated to cover fully in just one coat. These can be expensive but it will save both time and the cost of an extra tin of paint for a second coat.
