Add drama with monochrome colour schemes or go for gloss on the floors and surfaces.

For added luxury, add voluminous curtains made from sumptuous materials such as silk or velvet. Perhaps you prefer to get back to basics with a minimalist approach? Remember to de-clutter before starting the refit, otherwise the style just won’t work.

Create ample storage behind mirrors and doors to prevent work spaces getting untidy. Choose lighter colours to give a feeling of space and accessorize with one item, such as a statement candle. Whilst the minimalist look might work for a single person or even a couple, it is not an easy look to maintain for a family with children.

If space allows, add a vintage chair to complete the look. Search antique shops for stylish vanity units and go wild with accessories from wicker baskets, jugs and bathmats.

For something more contemporary, add a splash of colour. Stay away from large tiling but opt for pretty mosaic designs on the walls and place a bold rug to draw attention to stripped back floorboards.

Alternatively, you could recreate your own home spa. Invest in a feature bathtub and select polished marble for the floors and walls.

Enjoy a true spa experience with ambient colour changing lights and relaxing spa music. Ensure you have plenty of storage space available for essential oils and facial scrubs. Perhaps you would love to have a feature bath or walk in rain forest shower but you are a little tight on space?

Smaller bathrooms present a problem but with a little imagination, you can still create a special space. Keep the walls light and add mirrors to create a more airy feeling. Perhaps you would like to give your bathroom a makeover but a complete remodel is just not in the budget.

Clinically white bathrooms can be easily sexed up with a splash of on-trend colour. From towels to toilet seats, you can update your bathroom in an afternoon. Create a feature wall with graphic wallpaper and replace shower curtains that are past their sell by date.
