Bold Black in the Bathroom

Bold Black in the Bathroom
Your bathroom is probably the most often used room in the house, considering that every family member has access to it. Despite this, bathroom design is usually last on the list for homeowners, as people don’t see it as important as, say, the kitchen or sitting room. All the same, redesigning your bathroom can have a major effect on how you feel about your home in general, and can make your bathroom a pleasant and relaxing way to be. Up until recently, colour schemes for bathrooms are most often shades of white or reminiscent of the colours of the sea. However, people have slowly but surely begun to experiment with different colours in the bathroom, and one of the most exciting of these by far is black. Black may seem dull, dark and an instant recipe for a smaller bathroom, but used effectively black can have an incredible effect, turning an ordinary bathroom into a luxurious, opulent spa room.
All Out Black
Nowadays, it is possible to go all out and make every aspect of your bathroom black if you wish. Black sinks, toilets and baths are available, some with white inside to add contrast but it is possible to get completely black ones, too. If this look intrigues you, be careful not to bang into the bath when you get up in the middle of the night! With some clever lighting, you can manipulate the different finishes in your bathroom so it becomes a mixture of textures rather than colours. Consider black lacquer paint for the walls but a matte speckled tile for the floor. A granite counter top surrounding your bathroom sink can make for a beautiful contrast. Complete the look with black towels and black soap bottles if you dare! It’s even possible to purchase black toilet paper for those with a sense of humour.
High Contrast
If the all black look is a little too much, consider black tiles on the wall and floor but contrasted heavily against white fittings. You can use black towels to join the two looks together. The use of mosaic tiles in dark colours as a runner around the walls also works beautifully to add another texture to the room while still maintaining the mysterious allure of the black bathroom.
Black and Nature
If a high contrast is a little too sharp, but the thoughts of an all black bathroom keep you awake at night, then contrasting black tiles with dark natural materials such as wood can work brilliantly to maintain the glamour of a dark bathroom without seeming too harsh. You could even opt for black tiles to divide your bathroom into certain sections. Doing so adds light and shadow to create dimensions, such as the wonderful use of black tiles halfway up the wall for added contrast in the Sigma bathroom by My Beautiful Bathroom bathroom designs (pictured). Whatever you choose, be assured that a black bathroom adds glamour and drama to an often neglected, yet very important room. It’s simply up to you how far you want to take the trend.
