Boost The Size Of Your Bathroom
Here at My Beautiful Bathroom a question we’re asked pretty often is: “Can you make my bathroom bigger?”
Traditionally the smallest room in the house, bathrooms often are a bit space-compromised and no-one we know likes that feeling of claustrophobia and being cramped (especially if the room doesn’t have a window).
Apart from using large tiles on the wall (which actually make a small room look bigger) and painting the room in a light colour, there are a few other tips you can use to get the feeling and reality of more room.
These include keeping pictures and other wall decorations to a minimum and not grouping photographs together.
Don’t block off the only light source you have. For instance, if you’re fortunate enough to have a window in the smallest room then forget about curtains or blinds – think about some sort of valance instead or, better still, leave the window bare (we’re presuming you have marbled glass).
Other Things To Consider Are:
- Putting in some patterns – A basic pattern can add some interest to the walls and make them look bigger than a solid block of colour. Keep the background light though and keep the ceiling white
- Fitting a lot of glass – Mirrors are reflective and make a room appear larger so make the most of them. Could you put a large mirror on one wall or even make one of the walls all mirrored glass? Putting lights beside reflective surfaces is a good idea too as, again; it will give the illusion of more space.
- Let there be light – If you don’t have a window, is it possible to add a skylight? Think about getting recessed lighting.
- Always fit light-coloured flooring – or at least add a big cream rug if that’s not possible. Again, like the walls, larger tiles on the floor make a room look bigger and think about a light pattern.
- Don’t bother with a bathmat – it’ll just make the floor look cluttered. If you can’t do without one though, try and get one that’s a very similar shade to the existing rug or light floor. It’s all about getting everything to blend in together colour-wise.
- Paint any bathroom cabinets – a nice light colour such as white or cream. A pedestal sink will make the room look bigger than one which has clunky cabinets underneath it. You could also install a single tap rather than two to take up less room in the sink. Get rid of any unnecessary cabinets and use glass for your shelves which is more unobtrusive than wood or plastic. Fit a clear shower curtain so it’s not dividing the room.
- Fit a modern toilet seat – These are more compact these days than older varieties and take up less room. They’re also far more environmentally-friendly.
- Fit a new bathroom door – Could you change the existing door to a sliding one? Or even think about getting the door to open outwards rather than into the room itself?
The above are just a few ideas you can consider to show you that a small bathroom doesn’t actually need to stay that way!
