Build Yourself A Bigger Bathroom
With the fashion for smaller rooms in new-build houses these days, together with the desire for more bathrooms in our homes, the smallest room in the house is certainly living up to its name with many ‘extra’ toilets reduced to the width and height of a mere cupboard in some cases.
But, with the aid of some trickery, it’s possible to ‘enlarge’ the bathroom, or at least make it feel less claustrophobic. For instance using plain rather than elaborate fittings will give it a less cluttered feel.
There’s plenty you can do with tiles too. By placing larger tiles on the floor you’ll ‘open it up’, giving the impression it covers more space than it actually does.
To enhance this idea even more cover the outer skirting of the bath with a smaller version of the same tiles if you can get a hold of them. Similar tile logic applies to the walls. By placing rectangular tiles vertically you can make the room appear taller, place them horizontally and it’ll seem wider.
Colour matters too. Softer colours such as stone and beige will make the room appear lighter and therefore larger, darker and deeper colours will give an enclosed impression.
More Simple Tips To Make Your Bathroom Look Bigger
- If the bathroom door opens into the room change it so that it opens outwards into the hall to ensure it’s not taking up space in the toilet.
- You can also give the impression of more space by gluing a mirror flat onto the wall or by going for a mirrored unit. This will reflect light and at the same time make the room look brighter.
- Use light coloured tiles, white tiles will make the room look much bigger.
- Don’t go for a rectangle or square shower enclosure, instead go for a quadrant type as in the picture above as this will really open up the room and give the illusion of space.
- If you have a shower bath then don’t cut off the light by putting up a colour block curtain on a rail system. Instead opt for a clear glass shower screen as this will allow the eyes to look right through to the back of the room.
- Do you really need both a bath and a shower? A shower would take up less space while a bath could be fitted with a shower spray
- Think about adding some kind of cornice as this will draw the eye upwards, taking in the impression of more space
- Consider putting up floating shelves above the toilet seat to store your toiletries instead of a bulky cabinet
- If you’re fortunate enough to have a window in the bathroom don’t block out the light by hanging curtains. Instead, put up blinds
One course of action which would definitely help make the room appear larger, although it’s a costly tactic, is to change the bathroom suite to a wall-hung variety where the plumbing and cistern was hidden in the wall. It not only gives the impression of more floor space in the room but also looks neater and less cluttered (which in turn makes the room appear larger).
You can also add in some space saver bathroom furniture to hide ugly plumbing an spice things up. If this all makes you feel a little tired just reading it, don’t despair.
