Eco-Flooring For Your New Bathroom – A Handy Guide

Eco-Flooring For Your New Bathroom – A Handy Guide

Recycled and eco-friendly products are big news these days. And it hasn’t escaped the attention of the kitchen and bathroom suppliers either. Here at My Beautiful Bathroom we’re quite often asked about eco-friendly solutions for kitchen or bathroom units and fittings. In this post we’re going to take a look at the bathroom and in particular flooring which proves kind to the environment and, in some cases, is also recycled.

As you would imagine, it’s not easy finding a material which can absorb as much water as a bathroom floor gets. Not to mention spilled make up, soap and even mould from a shower curtain. But the following floors can all cope:

 Linoleum

Yep, you probably grew up with this – not just in the bathroom but the kitchen too. But there’s a reason for that. It’s because it’s so tough and durable. Made from natural materials such as linseed oil, linoleum is water, fire and scratch resistant. It’s also inexpensive and there are plenty of spectacularly trendy and colourful styles around these days.

 Glass Pebble

A big favourite with some of the staff here at My Beautiful Bathroom Installations, pebble tile will massage your feet as you walk on it. So the money you spend on fitting it you’ll save on foot massages in the long run! Seriously though, this flooring comes recycled and can look pretty spectacular in any bathroom.

 Concrete

It sounds cold and hard but lay a rug on top and you don’t even have to touch it with your feet on cold mornings. Concrete can look stunning when stained and it’s an extremely green material, consisting liberally of recycled ash, glass and porcelain.

 Cork

Cork has been around for years of course (as insulation in radio and TV studios for instance) as well as bottle tops and pin boards. But it’s also antimicrobial, non-toxic and resistant to mildew – which makes it ideal as a bathroom flooring. In ‘green’ terms the cork oak tree is the only one whose bark can regenerate after harvest meaning there’s no actual damage done to the tree. The tree itself can retain carbon so is definitely worth keeping around for the sake of the planet.

 Terrazzo

It sounds like a new Italian pizza joint that’s just opened up around the corner, but Terazzo is actually an extremely long-lasting and good-looking flooring which is very easy to keep clean and maintain. It consists of pieces of marble and granite set in concrete and is probably one of the most environmentally-friendly of all floors we’ve mentioned here. The only down side is that it can prove a bit too pricey for most basic budgets.

 Recycled Glass Tile

It’s been used for coasters and even necklaces but recycled glass is also a pretty amazing flooring for a bathroom. It comes in a range of colours from green to blue, yellow and even red. Or how about a mixture? Incredibly eco-friendly, of course. We’re sure there’s other eco-flooring options out there but these are the main five that come to mind. We’d be interested to hear if you know of, or have used any others.
