How To Pick A Bath For Your New Bathroom – A Handy Guide
If you think a bathtub is just a bathtub, I’ve got some bad news for you.
As well as having to think about colour schemes, sizes and shapes for your new bath, you also have to decide between different materials to make sure you get the correct bath fitted for your needs. The choice boils down to a cast iron bath, a steel bath, a stone resin one, or an acrylic one. Let’s consider the pros and cons of each one…
Cast Iron Baths
Baths have been made from cast iron for centuries. But, despite this, they’re still popular due to their strong, sturdy composition. The enamel surface layer (fired onto the iron at extremely high temperatures) is hard wearing, resistant to impact and to scratches.
One downside is that cast iron is extremely heavy, which can be a problem for some properties (which may need their floors strengthened). Another downside is that they don’t insulate heat well, which means water gets cooler quicker. Not so great if you like a long soak.
Steel Baths
Similar to cast iron baths, but lighter in weight.
Stone Resin Baths
These bathtubs use a stone resin composite with an organic glossy white finish. Like metal baths, they are strong and sturdy, with a hardwearing surface layer. The big difference is that they insulate heat far better, keeping the bathwater warmer for longer. Their disadvantage is their price.
Acrylic Baths
These are the cheap option, which is their big selling point. To be fair, they’re lightweight, retain heat well and can be easy to maintain (scratches can be easily removed). The down side – the bit where you find out you get what you pay for – is that they’re made of inferior materials, which means acrylic baths flex easily and aren’t particularly strong.
If you are going to choose an acrylic bathtub for your new bathroom design, it’s probably worth getting one with fibre resin reinforcement – which will give the tub added strength and weight.
