The Basics Of Choosing Bathroom Sinks

The Basics Of Choosing Bathroom Sinks

Some interior designers say that your bathroom sink sets the tone for your entire bathroom design.

That’s because, in most bathrooms, the sink occupies centre stage, so to speak. So it’s important to choose wisely when it comes to choosing yours. If you’ve already been looking around for a bathroom basin, then you will no doubt have discovered that there is an enormous range to choose from.

So, how do you choose? Perhaps the first thing to consider is how your sink will be used. For example, for family use, it might be practical to select under counter model with plenty of storage space below and counter above for bathroom bottles. Alternatively, a couple might like a pair of his and her twin skins with matching vanity units for the ultimate in bathroom luxury.

What Type Of Basin Is Best For Your Needs

  • Wallmount – A basin that is hung from the wall at a location and height of your choosing. An ideal all-round bathroom sink.
  • Pedestal – A good idea for small bathrooms or guest bathroom where space is limited. Sleek and sophisticated, these basins make the most of space and can be a focal point for the room.
  • Countertop – Also called self-rimming basins or drop ins, these sink into prepared countertops thus providing room for bottles and other bathroom accessories. Good for families.
  • Vessel/Above Counter – These can look very stylish, rising or sitting above the countertop and look great in the master bathrooms adding a modern, contemporary feeling to the space. Stunning with wall-mounted taps
  • Integrated Countertop – These are basins that are integrated into a countertop, so they are fitted as one. The advantage here is, since there are no seams, they are easy to keep clean.
  • Semi-Countertop – A good way to enjoy a larger sink while saving space. The semi-countertop basin extends beyond the ledge of the countertop.
  • Corner – A good option for a small bathroom with an available corner. These can be in the pedestal or wallmount format.

Other considerations. Once you know what type of basin you’d like to install, before rushing out and buying, there are several other things you’ll need to take into account.

  • Make sure it fits – Measure the space available for your new basin very carefully. Mistakes can be costly.
  • Colour – If you’re buying a basin separate from the rest of your bathroom, ensure it fits in with the rest of your colour scheme, or that you can purchase matching units later.
  • Taps – Faucets come in all shapes and sizes too. If you don’t choose them when you buy your basin, you’ll need to make sure that when you do fit them, they’re the right size and compatible for the corresponding holes in the basin.
  • Style – Bathroom sinks come in a massive range of styles these days from practical to traditional to modern.

Choose one that fits in with the theme you have planned for your bathroom.
