The bathroom may be the smallest room in your home but in proportion to its size it’s probably the room (apart from the bedroom) that we make most use of. That’s because, as well as using it for bathing, we’re often in there putting on make-up (well, the females amongst us are), reading, peering into the mirror, cutting our toenails and generally chilling out for a bit.
It’s the first room we go into when we get up and the last one at night. So really, contrary to what you may believe, it’s not actually an insignificant room that never really features in our lives. Very often there isn’t a lot of daylight coming into a bathroom, and some of these rooms have no window at all and yet, many of the functions and activities that take place here require not just adequate, but very good lighting. So what sort of lighting is available for your bathroom these days?
Different forms of lighting for bathrooms Ambient lighting
This is your central (or ceiling) lighting which aims to illuminate the whole bathroom. It doesn’t have to be placed in the centre of the room but it does need to be shaded as the last thing you will need is for water to hit it. Ambient lighting could also take the form of spotlights spread over the ceiling
Accent lighting
You would install this when you wanted to light up one particular area. For instance, sconces (or wall lights) are regularly placed to highlight a feature such as an inbuilt arch and framed prints. If you are particularly proud of your impressive new storage cabinets then you could arrange to have those lit up too
Task lighting
This will provide enough light to allow a particular function such as a wall mounted light above, alongside or in a mirror to make shaving or putting on make-up easier because it provides excellent light without any shadows. Specially recessed waterproof shower lights would also come under this category.
Mood Lighting
A bit like accent lighting but with even less light involved. Mood lights are usually placed alongside a bath panel or on the floor so that there is enough light to navigate at night without having to switch on the brighter bulbs. Other forms of bathroom lighting under this category include colour-changing lights and cove lighting. Meanwhile, if your bathroom is big enough, a table lamp can often provide a pretty soft light (just as long as it’s kept away from any sources of water).
