How To Make A Small Bathroom Seem Bigger

Is the bathroom the smallest room in the house?

With the typical bathroom in a newly built home measuring just 2m x 2m, bathrooms are getting smaller, rather than bigger.

So, if you have a small bathroom, how can you make it feel bigger? There are two ways to approach this…

Increasing Bathroom Space In A Small Bathroom

Unless you plan to knock a wall through, the only way to actually increase space is by freeing up space by taking things away…

  • Tidy away the bottles – do you really need all those shower gel, shampoo and bubble bath bottles lying around all the time? The more clutter you have, the smaller your bathroom space will be. Put them away in a cupboard and you’ll instantly have more space.
  • Get rid of your bath – the bath takes up a lot of space in a small bathroom. Replacing it with a walk-in shower will give you a lot more space.
  • Heating – radiators in the bathroom can look dated and unappealing. If, instead, you choose a chrome towel rail, it’ll not just be more fashionable, it’ll take up less room. And, because chrome reflects light better, it’ll make the bathroom brighter (and seem bigger). An alternative would be underfloor heating. Without the need for a wall-mounted radiator, you get more space. And, although it’s expensive, it may be a good selling point if you ever decide to sell your house.

 Creating The Illusion Of Space

With the right use of light, you can make your bathroom seem bigger… even without increasing the amount of space.

  • Light, neutral colours – light colours for your bathroom’s walls, floors and ceilings can creates the illusion of more space. (Just as dark colours creates the illusion of less space.)
  • Use sunlight – the other way to brighten things up is through better use of natural light. That means allowing sunlight into the room – and using reflective surfaces to spread that light. For example, by placing a mirror near a window to reflect the sunlight. Reflective tiles are also useful for spreading light around the room.

These tricks won’t make a tiny 2 metre bathroom feel huge (your elbows will still be bumping up against things), but they’ll make it look bigger.
